Willem de Kooning 1981-1986, thru Nov. 17
Willem de Kooning (April 24, 1904 – March 19, 1997) was an abstract expressionist painter, born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Biography
In the post World War II era.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willem_de_Kooning... Some have said his very last works, most of which have never been exhibited, present a new direction of compositional complexity and daring color juxtapositions, Some speculate that his mental condition and attempts to recover from a life of alcoholism had rendered him unable to carry out the mastery indicated in his early works, while others see these late works as boldly prophetic of directions that some current painters continue to pursue. Unfortunately, gossip has tainted the scant critical commentary afforded these last works, which have yet to be seriously assessed.

a beautifully done book, hardbound, and 2 floor exhibition leaving no doubt that de Kooning pushed his investigations until incapacitated, we can only be so lucky.....from the notebook
...and there intrinsically locked is the woman's deconstructive spirit in de kooning's late work. The sharply stroked searching of the young man is seen only in dearly layed lines, the women of his life, a life of one with his making, returned to surround his final search. DeKooning's wife and Daughter return in these last 5 years of painting time before the Alzheimer's that hasclearly set into the Master's eyes and posture , visible in the studio shots of the hardbound coffeetable book accompanying the show. The beautiful, clear and quiet colors of female prescence manifest in these paintings of a brilliant unconscious. Aided by a lifetime of examined conscious, fighting and grappling and chasing all the way from the way past of the Netherlands and escape from thus in retreat to the ever developing dream mind. These 88"x77" (on average)displays of wisping flying grounding revealing concealing more moment attention paid masterpieces(at least one)-untitled xxvii, are everything in one breath and they feel as free as.
These paintings have all, wisely constructed neg/pos space, desert and ice like at once, and even a head as moountaintop, individualizing DeKoonings Figurative LAndscape Successes. The mind spreds across and among and throughout and within these fine pieces.
Thankyou de kooning, u show me so much. cheryl
